As we take a look at the relationships in Wuthering heights we see many different forms of love. Mainly the deep passion between Catherine and Heathcliff, which most readers respond to. Their love can ultimately be seen as self-centered. since the each ignore the needs, of the other. It is this destructive relationship that leads them to eventually break each other’s hearts. Heathcliff says “I have not broken your heart--you have broken it; and in breaking it, you have broken mine.” (Bronte, 158) To Heathcliff and Catherine, nothing else in the world matters and they are consumed by their unhealthy relationship.
Compared to this we see a stark difference between Hareton and Cathy’s love. While the older generation’s love was full of selfishness and abuse, the youngster’s have a relationship that, although at first is rocky, now shows happiness and tenderness. Nelly remarks on their new romance, she says “the intimacy thus commenced grew rapidly… one loving and desiring to esteem, and the other loving and desiring to be esteemed—they contrived in the end to reach it’” (300) They show that they care more about each other’s feelings than their own and this finally restores balance to the chaos their parents left behind.
