One main aspect of the novel is violence. Each of the characters undergo a certain amount of violence at some point during the book, whether physically or verbally. An example of such violence can be seen when Heathcliff says “I’ll crush his [Edgar’s] ribs in like a rotten hazelnut… I shall murder him some time.” (Bronte, 115) The main plot of the book follows acts of violence and the effects they have on the characters. At the end of the book when the most abusive characters are no longer alive, the atmosphere changes and becomes a much nicer, more balanced one. What do you think the story of Wuthering Heights would be like without the violence?

Since the news is constantly filled with it, as well as the video games we play and the shows or movies we watch, do you feel like as a society we have become desensitized to violence? During the 1800’s, when Emily Bronte wrote the novel, there was not as common a trend of violence in the world. This novel would have been quite shocking to those reading it at the time. It is curious, why Bronte would choose to portray such violence and abuse in the novel when she herself wouldn’t necessarily have been exposed to it.
